Day 5 (by Caroline)

Today when we got to site we had to bail out even more water than usual because we missed the previous week and also had more rain in the past week than normal.

We picked up where we left off two weeks ago. Katy and JJ continued scraping and piece-plotting in Unit 5. A few pieces of debitage were found that were left in the unit because they were a little too large to move just yet. The two large rocks were still not quite ready to be taken out though, hopefully within the next week or two they will be ready to move.

​Robert and Ben continued to excavate Unit 12 where they were able to find two pottery sherds, they both appear to be complicated stamped. This was very exciting to be able to see something that was still in good shape and actually be able to see the detail in the stamp!

​Ella and DuVal opened up Unit 13 which is right at the edge of the machine-cut wall.  We are very hopeful about this unit because it is right above the features that are so clear in the wall of the downstairs level. ​

The beginning stages of excavating the west half of Unit 3. It began at a sloped angle so we had to flatten it out down to 40 cm below datum.

Next to Unit 5, Sam and I opened up the west half of Unit 3 today (a 1x2m portion of the unit). We had to redo some of our points because they were slightly off when we were trying to set up the corners. We were only going partway down into the first plowzone, which put us at about 40 cm below datum. We sifted through everything we took out of the unit. The only we found worth mentioning was a piece of quartz. It is possible that it has been worked on but until it is washed and looked at closer it we can't be sure.
